LTL Shipping: What You Need to Know

Understanding LTL Shipments

LTL (Less Than Truckload) shipping is typically used for shipments that consist of 6 standard-size pallets or less. However, each carrier has its own rules and limitations, which can vary significantly. That’s why having a knowledgeable partner like us can help you navigate these guidelines to determine the best shipping option. If your shipment exceeds a carrier’s limit, you could face unexpected charges, making it crucial to get expert advice beforehand.

Guaranteed LTL Options

If you have time-sensitive shipments, we offer guaranteed LTL services to ensure delivery by a specific date. It's important to understand that each carrier has different types of guaranteed options, along with varying policies. A standard "guaranteed" delivery doesn't always mean the same thing across all carriers, so it's essential to clarify what’s included to avoid surprises.

Transit Time Misconceptions

One of the biggest misconceptions with LTL shipping is related to transit times. Carriers often provide posted transit days, which represent the fastest possible delivery time under ideal conditions. However, many shippers mistakenly believe this is a guaranteed delivery window. Remember:

  • Transit times do not include the day of pickup, weekends, or holidays.
  • It can take an additional 1-2 days for carriers to complete the pickup.
  • To set realistic expectations, we often recommend doubling the estimated transit time. For example:
    • A 5-day transit might actually take 5-10 days.
    • An 8-day transit could range from 8-16 days.
    • A next-day transit might take 1-3 days.
